Game for a Challenge: Mike Weir at the US Open

Friday, June 18th, 2010

This past Thursday the 2010 US Open kicked off at Pebble Beach in California. Although the venue’s sensational vistas have been great for spectators, the dry weather and firm greens have been serving up a fast game for the players.

The rigid greens and lack of moisture have been presenting golfers with a difficult game to say the least, but Canadian Mike Weir says he’s up for the challenge. Weir was quoted by the Vancouver Sun confidently stating, “I enjoy that challenge. I’ve done well in the U.S. Opens because I know it’s going to be tough. You know every three-footer is going to be tough.”

Sitting in fourth place, Weir just trails one stroke behind the leaders, but not without a sense of purpose. Since being diagnosed with cancer this past year, Weir’s mother Donna has become a fixed mark for him during these often turbulent games. He spoke about the impact his mother has had on him in a recent press conference saying, “It’s nice because I’m playing for somebody else…It’s always been about me, me, me. What am I going to shoot? It doesn’t matter to me. I love my mom. What do you say?”

How can you lose with that attitude? Let’s go Mike! As always, Canada’s behind you on this one.

Walkin’ on the Sun: GolfPatio.com’s Calgary SUN Article

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Alright! Did you hear? GolfPatio.com made it into the sports section of the Calgary SUN yesterday! And just in time for the start of golf season too. We feel very honored for the special recognition and glad that others think our website is as cool as we think it is.

GolfPatio.com’s co-founder Jay Barrett (CPGA Professional) was interviewed for the article and quoted many times throughout. Jay did a great job of articulating the convenient tee time service that GolfPatio.com offers golfers and explaining how the website works with both Canadian and international golf courses.

Northern Bear Partners With GolfPatio.com

Monday, June 8th, 2009

GolfPatio is excited and pleased to announce the Northern Bear Golf Course as a new partner.  The Northern Bear is located in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada – a 30 minute drive from downtown Edmonton. It is a Jack Nicklaus design, built in the legendary tradition of his other prestigious and spectacular courses, and is the latest Canadian addition to the Nicklaus family of golf courses.  The Northern Bear is the third Canadian Signature daily fee course – Toronto’s Glen Abbey and Whistler’s Nicklaus North are the first two.  Play the “Bear” and you will find a perfect blend of tree lined fairways and strategic bunker placements.  There are five lakes and USGA standard greens all designed to give the ultimate in playability to every golf enthusiast.

I have had the opportunity to play Northern Bear on many occasions as it is just ten minutes down the road from my old golf course, the Belvedere Golf and Country Club.  I must say that the “Bear” is perhaps my favourite layout of golf holes in Alberta.  Every hole is aesthetically pleasing to the eye when standing on the tee box and all are true golf holes without gimmicks or silly shots to be made.  The 9th and 18th holes are marvellous par 4’s with greens protected by lakes and the spectacular clubhouse up on the hill right behind them. You really feel as though you are in a special place when walking down these fairways and knowing that Nicklaus himself walked them as well.

The 10th hole is a fun, risk / reward par 5 that a player can try to go for in two shots or play conservative and make the “easy” par.  There are many more excellent holes, and I would have trouble singling out one hole over another as they are all challenging and fun to play.  It is not often that a golfer can say that about a golf course as there are usually a few holes that do not suit your eye or that you really do not enjoy playing.  When you play many golf courses, at the end of the round you can think back and have trouble remembering each golf hole but when you play the Bear, each hole seems to stick out and you remember the scenery and each shot you have made.

Though the Bear is a championship golf course, Nicklaus designs his courses for players of all skill levels.  There are five sets of tee boxes ranging from 5,800 to 7,400 yards which will entice novices and experts alike.  Holes appear intimidating from the tee box thanks in large part to some very well placed bunkers, but once you have hit your tee shot and are safely in the fairway you can look back and wonder what you were so nervous about.  The greens are well bunkered and have many collection areas if a ball is not hit deep enough into a green.  The course is demanding, but fair, and rewards a well hit golf shot.

The Northern Bear is not just about golf.  The club is able to accommodate corporate tournaments and outings to suit any business’ needs.  They are also able to host corporate retreats and meetings as well as weddings and other special events.  The setting is beautiful, and as you enter the clubhouse, which overlooks the 9th and 18th holes, you are met by their signature waterfall in the lounge entrance.  Real estate is also available with the Villas at Northern Bear.  Visit the course profile page for Northern Bear Golf Club to see more course details.

Book your tee times for Northern Bear today and enjoy! Also, continue to check our Discount Tee Times for periodic reduced rates.

Until next time,

Free Golf at Fairmont Hot Springs

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Thinking about  a trip to B.C.? There’s no time like the present to take advantage of the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort’s latest enticing offer: free golf.

Located in the Windermere Valley of eastern B.C., the Fairmont will be offering accommodations for $89 per person (based on double occupancy) and golf for free at one of their three courses – Riverside, Mountainside or the par-3 Creekside (nine holes) from April 19 – 23 and April 26 – 30. In addition to accommodations and one round of golf for every night booked, this package also includes access to the pools, steam room and sauna.

As Harrison McKay, the Fairmont Hot Springs’s marketing manager, said in the Edmonton Journal this week: “This is a great opportunity to experience the B.C. Rockies with 45 holes of free golf on your doorstep. Our courses are in wonderful shape and our natural mineral springs and spa can make sure you stay in great shape after your round of golf.”

Discount Tee Times to Heal Spring Golf Itch

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

The weather is warming and we’re all itching to dust off the clubs and hit the links. Depending on where you live you might have a more patient wait than others (ie. me in Edmonton). However, simply because you live in a colder climate does not mean you can’t play some golf in March and April!

Due to the tough economy there are lots of great flight seat sales currently so it might be cheaper than you think to book a weekend golf trip to a sunny destination. As a result, I wanted to inform our readers that GolfPatio has a nice inventory of Discount Tee Times in many of the popular sunny spots, such as Arizona, Florida, California, Texas, Nevada, and Hawaii.

I was browsing the Discount Tee Times today and saw deals up to 70% off normal rates, such as a 68% tee time special for the Links Course at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club. This course is absolutely beautiful and you can play 18 holes with a power cart for $59US, which saves you a whopping $126US.

Prefer Southern California? There is a nice tee time discount for the Carlton Oaks Golf Course just outside of San Diego. You can golf 18 holes there for an amazingly low price of $35US. If you always thought you could be a pro than you will be happy to know that Carlton Oaks Golf Course is hosting both a Canadian Tour School Qualifier and PGA Tour First Stage Qualifier in 2009. Put yourself to the test on this beautiful Perry Dye designed course.

I don’t want to forget everyone out East! In Florida alone I believe there are about 400 Discount Tee Times each day currently. One tee time special that stood out to me was at the famous Great White Course at Doral Golf Resort, which was designed by Greg Norman. The Great White Course at Doral is known to be the only true “desert-scape” golf course of high quality within the Southeastern United States. The tee time discount is 24%, which for such a high quality course is quite generous. Golfing at Doral will still run you about $190US but the $60 you save can definitely buy you a nice souvenir or a fun 19th hole feast.

I could go on for days about the many discount tee times being offered but I encourage you to take a look and get out there golfing sooner rather than later. Browse the links provided below for Discount Tee Times at the most popular destinations or search other locations on our Discount Tee Times page – enjoy!
